What is the National Service Scheme?

National Service Scheme, Popularly known as NSS is an extension of activities to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in education institutions, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.

When was the National Service Scheme launched?

National Service Scheme was launched on 24th September, 1969 by the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao in 37 universities with 40,000 NSS Volunteers covering all States.

What is the Motto of NSS?

The Motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme if “NOT ME BUT YOU”.

What are the aims & objectives of NSS?

Aims & Objective of NSS are:
i. To understand the community in which they work;
ii. To understand themselves in relation to their community;
iii. To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
iv. To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
v. To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problem;
vi. To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities:
vii. To gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
viii. To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
ix. To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and
x. To practice national integration and social Harmony

What is the overall objective of NSS?

Development of Student’s personality through community service.

What does the colour Navy blue depict in NSS badge?

The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

What colour red depict in NSS badge?

The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit.

What are the obligations of NSS Volunteers?

To work for two continued years along with their studies, putting in 120 hours service each year and participating in one special camping Programme.

Where is the NSS headquarter located?

The NSS Headquarter located in New Delhi.

What is the Goal of NSS?

The NSS symbol is based on the Rath wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Odisha.

The NSS day is observed on 24th September every year.

What is the pride of NSS Volunteers?

NSS Badge, NSS Certificate and Identity card are the pride of NSS Volunteers.

What are the principal elements of NSS?

There are four principal elements in the NSS programme process; they are Students, Teachers, Community and the programme.

Who is the National Head controlling this scheme?

The Programme Adviser, NSS, New Delhi is the National Head controlling this scheme.

How many NSS unit can be allotted to an institution?

It depends upon the student strength of an institution. A unit can be of 100 students.

How can one join NSS?

Simply by enrolling/registering yourself in NSS unit through the Programme Officer concerned However, before joining you must be a bona fide student of school, college or university.

I am a graduate and still very keen to be a part of NSS. How can I continue my association with NSS?

You can join in an NSS open unit.

Can a student of 7th or 8th standard join NSS?

No, the National Service Scheme starts from 11th standard onwards.

What is the nature of this scheme, whether compulsory or voluntary?

NSS is a voluntary Scheme.

Is it compulsory to wear NSS badge?

It is obligatory to wear NSS badge during community service.

What is the uniform in NSS?

There is no uniform prescribed for NSS volunteers.

How much time I will have to devote as an NSS volunteer?

Total 240 hours social service in two years duration. Of which 20 hours for orientation course, 30 hour for campus work and remaining 70 hours for community services in a year. Further a seven-day special camp will be attended by the NSS Volunteer in the adopted village.

What sorts of benefit I can get from this scheme?

You can get some weightage during admissions in higher studies and other benefits as decided by the institutions/university.

Is it compulsory to wear NSS badge ?

It is obligatory to wear NSS badge during community service.

IS it compulsory to attend 7 days NSS Special Camp?

Yes, it is compulsory, to attend seven days NSS special camp beside regular activities (one camp in 2 year of volunteership).

Can I get any award for some extraordinary social work?

Beside State level award as constituted by the concerned State Governments. You can also get Indira Gandhi NSS award at the National Level and SAARC Youth award at SAARC level.

Can I get any chance for visiting other States in the country or abroad? How?

Yes, you can get several chances for visiting other States/abroad through youth Exchange programmes such as National Integration Camp, Interstate Youth Exchange and Home Stay programme, Mega Camp, National Youth Festival and Adventure programmes etc.

What sort of activities is undertaken in NSS?

Mainly two type of activities i. Regular Activities ii. Special Camping programmes.

How NSS will be useful in developing my personality?

The NSS refines personality through exposure with the various segments of the society and community services within the institution and in the adopted village.

Will NSS have any adverse effect on my studies?

No. NSS will not have any sort of adverse effect on your studies rather it refines thinking/reasoning power yielding better result in studies.

Will I get some additional weightage during my admission in higher studies?

Yes, you can get additional weightage as decided by the Institution ranging.

Will I get some preference as given to NCC Cadets will applying Govt. jobs?

No such provision has been made for appointment in Govt. jobs. Personality , knowledge & confidence of an NSS Volunteer makes him invincible in every sphere of life.

Which Central Ministry govern & implement NSS scheme?

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.

What are the National Level projects undertaken by NSS?

The major National Level projects undertaken by NSS are AIDS awareness, afforestation, blood donation camps, RRCs, cleanliness of our environment, disaster management etc.

What is the difference between NSS & NYKS?

NYKS stands for Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and basically deals with rural youth and NSS deals with perusing education student youth.

What is an NSS unit?

A specific group of NSS volunteers working under the Programme Officer in a school, college or university with a total volunteers of 100 or 50.

Who is the Programme Officer?

In charge of an NSS unit in the school, college or university is designated as NSS Programme Officer.

What is the tenure of NSS Special Camping Programme?

Three years extendable another one year.

What is meant by NSS Special Camping Programme?

NSS Camp of 7 days duration in the adopted village/slum area.

What is the student in NSS known as?

NSS volunteer.

Who is the Head of NSS at State Level?

State Liaison Officer, NSS.

Can I continue as an NSS volunteers for five years consequently i.e. from standard up to graduation?

Yes, you can even after graduation too.

What is meant by regular activities in NSS?

Various activities undertaken by the NSS volunteers in adopted villages/slums for community service on yearly basis. Duration of these is 120 hours.

How can I participate in Republic Day parade camp at Raj path in New Delhi?

You will have to get through the NSS Pre-Republic Day Parade Camp organized before Republic day at regional level. Also you must have to be a good physical health and measurements as prescribed by the Ministry of Youth affairs & Sports.

What are the physical criteria for participation in NSS Republic day Camp?

Beside good physical health, height 155-165 cm for female volunteers and 165-175 cm is required for male volunteers.

What is Inter State Youth Exchange Programme?

It is the programme sponsored by the Ministry where NSS volunteers of one state visit another state to get acquainted with customs and tradition of other states.

What is an adopted village/slum?

Generally an NSS unit adopts a nearby village where certain projects are run by the NSS volunteers for the development of village.

What is meant by community service?

Services rendered by the NSS volunteers in the community.

Does NSS celebrate National Youth days, Weeks etc.?

Yes.

What is the idea behind manual labour done by NSS volunteers?

The idea behind the manual labour is that the students must learn the dignity of labour.

What is the role of NSS during Natural calamities or disaster?

NSS is expected to undertake relief and rescue operations during natural calamities are close coordination with other Govt. /Voluntary organisations.

What is “UTA” (UNIVERSITIES TALK AIDS)?

UTA stands for Universities Talk AIDS aimed at AIDS awareness programmes especially designed for college/university level students launching from October 1991.

What contribution has NSS given against the devil of AIDS?

NSS has created awareness among student & masses by means of AIDS awareness rallies, seminars meeting & Quiz contests etc.

Are we supposed to work in close coordination with Health Services department, Doctors Etc. in hospital?

YES

What are common programmes on Health in which NSS volunteers generally participate?

Blood donation camps, pulse polio immunization, health awareness rallies etc.

Does NSS hold any sort of School/College/State/National level competitions regularly on various subjects?

Yes, such as slogan, quiz, painting, essay writing competition etc.

Like, NSS Programme Officers, do volunteers also get some orientation?

Yes, 20 hours Orientation of NSS volunteers is given in the beginning of volunteer ship.

I have seen NSS volunteers cleaning the roads, Schools/Hospitals premises, collecting garbage, digging pots etc., are they labourers?

No, while participating in manual labour, the volunteers get dignity of labour.

Has this scheme been incorporated in curriculum of any standard?

In certain professional colleges, NSS has been a part of the curriculum.

Beside 7 days NSS Special Camps, what does Day Camps stand for?

Day camps provide an opportunity to volunteers to taken up short duration study projects.

I have heard about some NSS Regional Directorates, What is their role?

NSS Regional Centers implement NSS in the region and liaison with the State Governments.

How many NSS Regional Centers are there in India?

There are 15 NSS Regional Directorates all over India. NSS Regional Centre (NER) is our regional center.

I supposed to participate in election campaigns, rallies as an NSS volunteer?

Yes, if it is centrally sponsored.

Am I supposed to administer injections during immunization programmes?

No, but mass mobilization and awareness campaigns are organized through NSS

How many sapling I will have to plant in a year to get the NSS certificate?

There is no certain number of saplings. You can plant as much as you can.

Can I donate blood during blood donation camps?

Yes, these are voluntary camps.

How many States/UTs does NSS cover all over the country?

Al the state & UTs are covered under NSS.

What is the present allocation of NSS volunteers in the country?

3.8 million Volunteers.

What sort of services can NSS unit provide in the slum/adopted village areas?

Cleanliness, driver, Health awareness programmes, literacy, cultural & other related programme.

Is this scheme applicable to only Government Schools and Colleges?

All the Private Schools/colleges affiliated with +2 Board or universities recognized the by the Government can have NSS unit.

Can NSS unit coordinate with other Govt. agencies for accomplishment of undertaking projects in adopted areas/slums?

Yes, in collaboration with other Government department, NSS activities can be implemented.

Has NSS volunteers ever been exposed to work in natural disasters & calamities?

Yes, NSS volunteers have done commendable work during natural calamities at the time of Bhuj earthquake and Tsunami in coastal region of south India.

Does the Vice-Chancellor of the university have any role in implementation of NSS?

All the NSS activities in universities and its constituent college are organized under the surveillance of the Vice Chancellor.

How many NSS volunteers can participate in a Special Camp?

Normally of half of the NSS unit i.e. 50 NSS volunteers participate in Special Camp.

Who is entitled to get NSS completion Certificate?

A Volunteer who has completed 240hrs (120hrs X 2yrs) regular activities and seven days special camp in adopted village is entitle to get NSS Certificate duly signed by Programme Officer, Principal of the College, Programme Co-ordinator and Vice Chancellor of the University where the college/institution is affiliated to.
