National Service Scheme, Popularly known as NSS is an extension of activities to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in education institutions, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.
When was the National Service Scheme launched?
National Service Scheme was launched on 24th September, 1969 by the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao in 37 universities with 40,000 NSS Volunteers covering all States.

Aims & Objective of NSS are:

v. To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problem;

How many NSS unit can be allotted to an institution?
It depends upon the student strength of an institution. A unit can be of 100 students.
How can one join NSS?
Simply by enrolling/registering yourself in NSS unit through the Programme Officer concerned However, before joining you must be a bona fide student of school, college or university.
I am a graduate and still very keen to be a part of NSS. How can I continue my association with NSS?
You can join in an NSS open unit.
Can a student of 7th or 8th standard join NSS?
No, the National Service Scheme starts from 11th standard onwards.

What sorts of benefit I can get from this scheme?
You can get some weightage during admissions in higher studies and other benefits as decided by the institutions/university.

Can I get any award for some extraordinary social work?
Beside State level award as constituted by the concerned State Governments. You can also get Indira Gandhi NSS award at the National Level and SAARC Youth award at SAARC level.
Can I get any chance for visiting other States in the country or abroad? How?
Yes, you can get several chances for visiting other States/abroad through youth Exchange programmes such as National Integration Camp, Interstate Youth Exchange and Home Stay programme, Mega Camp, National Youth Festival and Adventure programmes etc.
What sort of activities is undertaken in NSS?
Mainly two type of activities i. Regular Activities ii. Special Camping programmes.
How NSS will be useful in developing my personality?
The NSS refines personality through exposure with the various segments of the society and community services within the institution and in the adopted village.
Will NSS have any adverse effect on my studies?
No. NSS will not have any sort of adverse effect on your studies rather it refines thinking/reasoning power yielding better result in studies.

What are the National Level projects undertaken by NSS?
The major National Level projects undertaken by NSS are AIDS awareness, afforestation, blood donation camps, RRCs, cleanliness of our environment, disaster management etc.

NYKS stands for Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and basically deals with rural youth and NSS deals with perusing education student youth.

How can I participate in Republic Day parade camp at Raj path in New Delhi?
You will have to get through the NSS Pre-Republic Day Parade Camp organized before Republic day at regional level. Also you must have to be a good physical health and measurements as prescribed by the Ministry of Youth affairs & Sports.
What are the physical criteria for participation in NSS Republic day Camp?
Beside good physical health, height 155-165 cm for female volunteers and 165-175 cm is required for male volunteers.
What is Inter State Youth Exchange Programme?
It is the programme sponsored by the Ministry where NSS volunteers of one state visit another state to get acquainted with customs and tradition of other states.
What is an adopted village/slum?
Generally an NSS unit adopts a nearby village where certain projects are run by the NSS volunteers for the development of village.

The idea behind the manual labour is that the students must learn the dignity of labour.

NSS is expected to undertake relief and rescue operations during natural calamities are close coordination with other Govt. /Voluntary organisations.

UTA stands for Universities Talk AIDS aimed at AIDS awareness programmes especially designed for college/university level students launching from October 1991.

Are we supposed to work in close coordination with Health Services department, Doctors Etc. in hospital?

Does NSS hold any sort of School/College/State/National level competitions regularly on various subjects?
Yes, such as slogan, quiz, painting, essay writing competition etc.
Like, NSS Programme Officers, do volunteers also get some orientation?
Yes, 20 hours Orientation of NSS volunteers is given in the beginning of volunteer ship.
I have seen NSS volunteers cleaning the roads, Schools/Hospitals premises, collecting garbage, digging pots etc., are they labourers?
No, while participating in manual labour, the volunteers get dignity of labour.
Has this scheme been incorporated in curriculum of any standard?
In certain professional colleges, NSS has been a part of the curriculum.
Beside 7 days NSS Special Camps, what does Day Camps stand for?
Day camps provide an opportunity to volunteers to taken up short duration study projects.
I have heard about some NSS Regional Directorates, What is their role?
NSS Regional Centers implement NSS in the region and liaison with the State Governments.

There are 15 NSS Regional Directorates all over India. NSS Regional Centre (NER) is our regional center.
I supposed to participate in election campaigns, rallies as an NSS volunteer?
Yes, if it is centrally sponsored.
Am I supposed to administer injections during immunization programmes?
No, but mass mobilization and awareness campaigns are organized through NSS
How many sapling I will have to plant in a year to get the NSS certificate?
There is no certain number of saplings. You can plant as much as you can.
Can I donate blood during blood donation camps?
Yes, these are voluntary camps.
How many States/UTs does NSS cover all over the country?
Al the state & UTs are covered under NSS.
What is the present allocation of NSS volunteers in the country?
3.8 million Volunteers.
What sort of services can NSS unit provide in the slum/adopted village areas?

Is this scheme applicable to only Government Schools and Colleges?
All the Private Schools/colleges affiliated with +2 Board or universities recognized the by the Government can have NSS unit.

Yes, in collaboration with other Government department, NSS activities can be implemented.
Has NSS volunteers ever been exposed to work in natural disasters & calamities?
Yes, NSS volunteers have done commendable work during natural calamities at the time of Bhuj earthquake and Tsunami in coastal region of south India.
Does the Vice-Chancellor of the university have any role in implementation of NSS?
All the NSS activities in universities and its constituent college are organized under the surveillance of the Vice Chancellor.
How many NSS volunteers can participate in a Special Camp?
Normally of half of the NSS unit i.e. 50 NSS volunteers participate in Special Camp.
